The threat of the Zika virus is prompting some athletes — mostly male golfers — to skip next month’s Summer Olympics in Brazil. One person who will be there is Tom Brady’s wife, Gisele Bundchen.
While the Pats QB will be toiling at training camp, his supermodel spouse will be hosting the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Word is Bundchen, who’s a native of Brazil, will strut through an ornate gateway at Maracana Stadium to kickoff off the 2016 Summer Games. The mosquito-borne Zika virus has been linked to birth defects. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week that four countries face the highest risk of a Zika outbreak if one of their athletes (or spectators) is infected during the Olympics. The CDC said Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Yemen have the factors that could result in a sustained spread of the virus. Among the athletes who’ve said they’re skipping the Olympics are golfers Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, and Vijay Singh.
