Panerai plunges once more into its military-diving history to produce its latest special edition, a new version of its popular Luminor 1950 3 Days Acciaio – 47 MM with “Marina Militare” inscribed on its black dial — a reference to the Italian Navy, which commissioned many of the first Panerai watches in the 1940s.
This 1,000-piece limited-edition model of the Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Acciaio (Ref. PAM00673) has a polished, 47-mm Luminor 1950 case, patterned after that of a watch model Panerai introduced in the late 1940s (and boasting the same dimensions as the original), made of 316L stainless steel and featuring the hallmark cusped caseband and trademarked lever bridge crown protector. The words “Marina Militare” appear on the dial in place of the usual “Panerai Luminor” text. The “sandwich” dial — along with the hour and minute hands — is enhanced with Grade-A Super-LumiNova that enables the big Arabic hour numerals to glow brightly in the dark. In another nod to its vintage inspiration, the watch has a domed crystal made of plexiglas rather than the more common sapphire used in most contemporary luxury timepieces.
Sapphire is used, however, for the exhibition window in the caseback, through which the owner can glimpse the watch’s movement, Panerai Caliber P.3000. This in-house-made, manual-winding movement, is equipped with two spring barrels that store a power reserve of 72 hours, or three days. At 16 1/2 lignes, the movement is comparable in size to the movements in early Panerai watches. Its other attributes include three satin-finished bridges protecting the movement and an additional bridge with twin supports for the balance wheel — also notably large, at 13.2 mm in diameter, and vibrating at a frequency of 3 Hz. Caliber P.3000 also has a device for rapid time zone adjustment, in which a star wheel with 12 teeth and a small spring clutch enable the hour hand to be moved forwards or backwards in one-hour increments without interfering with the position of the minute hand or the running of the watch.
The Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Acciaio – 47 MM “Marina Militare” edition comes on a brown “Ponte Vecchio” leather strap, made and treated in traditional leather workshops in Tuscany, the Panerai brand’s ancestral home. The strap features an imprinted “OP” (Officine Panerai) logo imprinted on it and beige contrast stitching. The watch is presented in a pear wood box that includes a second strap made of rubber, a spare plexiglas crystal, a steel screwdriver for changing straps, and a personalized certificate with the model’s limited-edition serial number. The timepiece is water-resistant to about 100 meters; it is priced at $10,200.
